Understanding by Design is an instructional tool used for educational planning that is focused on “teaching for understanding.” This methodology uses multiple forms of assessment to let students demonstrate their understanding in various ways. It incorporates a variety of resources. The teacher uses questioning, probing, and feedback to stimulate student reflection and rethinking. Information from ongoing assessments are used as feedback to adjust instruction as well as checking for student understanding and misconceptions. The basic precept is beginning with the desired result and then “work backwards” to develop instruction.
